Whether you want to jumpstart your struggling sex life or up the ante on your already-great one, here’s a simple tip to keep in mind.
Mindfulness: It’s a concept that means being in the moment. Have you ever tried to have sex when you have a million things on your mind? You can’t concentrate on the moment because your mind (and it is our mind that controls our sex drive) is being pulled in a dozen directions. One patient of mine referred to it as “40-year-old woman syndrome,” i.e. everything running through your thoughts—Johnny’s science project, Susie’s costume for the school play, the dog’s vet appointment, the shirts you forgot at the dry cleaner—making it difficult to enjoy the sex.
It’s hard to empty your mind, but you can start by focusing on the moment rather than letting your thoughts wander (to pile of laundry downstairs). Concentrate on the sensation, the touch, the smell, the taste. It may take practice to clear your head of all else, but practice makes perfect.
